Recycling Facts
-
In 2010, Americans recycled enough paper to cover 26,700 football fields.
-
Only 9% of plastics were recycled in 2013 and 2009.
-
Paper makes up nearly 30% of all waste that Americans throw away each year.
-
It takes 24 trees to make one-ton of new, un-recycled printing and office paper.
-
In 2009, we filled the United States with trash equvalent to 88 million cars, enough trash to circle the Earth 24 times.
Will this project really make an impact?
Yes, it will!
Now, with the advanced Internet, one can spread an idea internationally. WIth enough people on this site, they can share it. It is like the domino effect. This website is available to the public, hence it will spread internationally.
"And What Did You Do?"
I made invitations to a recycled workshop I'm hosting (see blog) and I will soon conduct the class. I'm also going to put up a poster on my father's office door (see picture below) advocating my site. Using my parent's social media, I will promote my site. Last but not least, I'm going to use word-of-mouth promotion among my peers.
"What if I'm not into crafts?"
Even if crafting is not your cup of tea, there are other ways to reduce your carbon footprint! Why not:
-
Set up recycling bins in your house?
-
Donate your recyclables to other crafters?
-
Buy less unneeded products with packaging?
Can you think of any other ways?
Why Recycle?
Children get many toys in the holidays, which soon lose their charm and become extra landfill. However, if they made recycled toys, it would reuse materials that would otherwise become landfill. Hence, making these toys does not use extra resources.
What's Environmental Stewardship?
Environmental Stewardship is when one responsibly conserves and uses resources. One can also be a good environmental steward by raising awareness about an environmental issue. In this case, I am raising awareness about recycling and combatting the problem by making Recycled Toys. Would you not like to be an Environmental Steward?
So is this project related to other issues?
Yes. For example, take Global Warming. The smoke from fossil fuels is caused by factories. When one makes recycled toys, one is helping the environment, for no new supplies are needed to make in factories. Also, take Carbon Footprints. When one makes recycled toys, one is conserving resources and therefore does not enlarge his carbon footprint.
